Peer support available in English

Illness often raises concerns and questions. Being diagnosed with a heart condition is not easy and dealing with it in Finnish can be overwhelming. If you or someone near you is suffering from a heart disease, support is available also in English.

Peer supporters know what it is like to live with a heart disease. They are trained volunteers who can encourage you by sharing their own experiences as they themselves have, or they have a loved one that has a heart disease. Peer supporters are there to listen and be by your side.

There is a search page for finding trained peer support persons in Finland. The page is in Finnish but with this link you will get a list of persons who serve in English.

If you feel like discussing your experiences, asking questions, or getting tips, you can also join the Foreign Hearts Finland group on Facebook. It is an English language support group for people living in Finland and having a heart disease or someone close to them who is suffering from one. The  group is maintained by trained volunteers. It works in co-operation with the Finnish Heart Association Sydänliitto ry.

Do you know how to measure your own blood pressure? Or do you know how to detect the most common cardiac arrythmia, atrial fibrillation? This spring the Heart Day tour will highlight the importance of measuring your blood pressure in order to prevent atrial fibrillation, heart failure and other severe heart conditions. We will guide on reliably taking your own pulse and measuring blood pressure, give information about common heart diseases and get you familiarized with local heart association’s activities. You can find the tour’s schedule from here: Sydänpäivä-kiertue – Sydänliitto Etelä-Suomen Alue ry (sydan.fi)

We also provide nature gyms and heart groups around the Uusimaa and Kymenlaakso regions. Nature gym is a fun way to exercise, utilizing natures own resources. Find your nearest nature gym: Katso lähin luontokuntosalisi – Sydänliitto Etelä-Suomen Alue ry (sydan.fi) And if you are in need of a peer support group, you can find them in here: https://sydan.fi/etelasuomi/artikkeli/sydanryhma/

Health counselling and measurements

Health measuring events are organized regularly. Our nurses will measure your cholesterol, blood sugar, hemoglobin and blood pressure. Nurses can also teach you how to take your own pulse correctly, and how to detect possible arrhythmia.

You will get the results of the measurements as well as your nurse’s health counselling immediately. Measurements cost between 2-39 euros, depending on what is being measured. Members of hearth associations pay a discounted rate. You can find information about the measuring days in our events calendar.

Measuring Blood pressure

High blood pressure is very common: one in two Finns has elevated blood pressure, while only one in five has ideal blood pressure. Although high blood pressure may seem harmless, it is important to be careful. When blood pressure is taken care of in time, the serious harm caused by it can be effectively prevented. On this page you will find instruction videos on how to measure blood pressure at home. Videos are available in 12 languages: Finnish, Swedish, English, Russian, Ukranian, Estonian, Somali, Arabic, Farsi, Spanish, Kurdish and Cantonese.
